The goal of Picross is to color boxes of the grid according to the numbers listed next to the columns and rows of the grid.
Let's take a look at a sample 5 by 5 game on the left, which happens to be Level 1 and Game 2: House. Feel free to play the game as you follow these directions by selecting the level and the game on the top menu bar. The numbers on the left show how many consecutive sets of colored boxes there are for each row. The number on the top show how many consecutive sets of colored boxes there are for each column. So the 3rd row shows a 5, and since there are only 5 boxes across for this game, it means all of row 3 are colored.
|
Now that we know all of row 3 should be colored, click the mouse down on the first box of row 3 and then drag it across till you reach the fifth box of row 3, then release the mouse button. You should have colored all the boxes in row 3. If you missed some while you were draggin, go back and click them. At this point, you will notice that 5 listed next to the third row has greyed out, this means that you have discovered all of the colored boxes for this row.
Next we will look at the middle column, 1 1 1.
|
The 1 1 1 listed by the middle column indicates that there are 3 sets of 1 colored box for this column. We already found one of them. The spaces in between the numbers tells us taht there is at least one empty box inbetween them. They could also be before and after the number sequence, but in our case, since we only have a total of 5 boxes in each column, the 3 colored boxes plus the minimum 2 empty boxes take up all 5 box space. Which means we know the first and last box of column 3 are colored. Go ahead and left-click them as shown in the diagram.
|
We know from the previous step that the second box and the fourth box of column 3 are empty. You can mark them empty by right-clicking on them. You can also right-click drag if you have a series of empty boxes you wish to mark.
Take a look at the first row. It shows that there is only one colored box in that row, and we already discovered it. Mark all the remaining unmarked boxes as empty, by righ clicking them.
|
There are time penalties in the game. If you left-click on a box that is empty, you will get a time penalty. The first mistake will cost 1 minute to tacked on to your time. The next mistake will add 2 minutes, then 4, then 8. You will not get penalized more than 8 minutes for each mistake. Also, marking empty boxes will not be penalized, regardless of whether the box should be colored or not.
You can finish the remaining puzzle on your own now. Good luck!
If you mark a box to be empty, but later decide that you were wrong, you can right-click the box to clear the empty box mark. There are also a couple of special keys you can hit during the game:
Spacebar - Pauses the game. Hit it again to resume.
Escape Key - Toggles between a Google search page screenshot.
